Supporting Participants with ADHD
Course Overview
This course provides a practical and neurological framework for support workers assisting participants with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It focuses on the customization of support strategies to address executive dysfunction, emotional dysregulation, and sensory processing needs.
Aligned with NDIS psychosocial and neurodevelopmental standards, this training shifts the focus from “compliance” to “collaboration.” Participants will learn how to build environments and routines that work with the ADHD brain’s unique dopamine-seeking nature rather than against it, fostering genuine independence and self-esteem.
What You’ll Learn
-
Define the neurobiological basis of ADHD, focusing on the prefrontal cortex and dopamine regulation.
-
Differentiate between the three presentations: Predominantly Inattentive, Hyperactive-Impulsive, and Combined.
-
Master the concept of “Executive Functioning” and how it impacts a participant’s ability to plan, focus, and remember tasks.
-
Implement practical environmental adjustments to reduce sensory overwhelm and minimize distractions.
-
Master “Body Doubling” and other collaborative support techniques to help participants initiate and complete tasks.
-
Navigate emotional dysregulation and “Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria” (RSD) with empathy and de-escalation skills.
-
Execute medication support and monitor for side effects or “rebound” periods while respecting the participant’s autonomy.
